Top UK Cities for Property Sales: Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Leeds Lead the Way

A study by Lomond using government data shows Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Leeds as the most active property markets in the UK.

When compared over the past six months, these markets have outperformed others based on the average number of homes sold each month.

In Glasgow, there have been about 928 home sales per month, while Edinburgh is close with an average of 849 homes sold monthly. Leeds is the busiest English city with 665 properties changing hands each month.

Lomond’s CEO Ed Phillips comments that although the Scottish market is thriving, other regions such as Yorkshire, the West Midlands, the South West, and the North East also have cities among the top 10 busiest markets. He emphasizes the variations in local markets compared to national trends.

Phillips advises homeowners to become familiar with their local markets to estimate home sale speed and price. He suggests a knowledgeable local agent can provide more accurate information than general housing market reports.

North Yorkshire is another strong market with 656 property sales per month, while Birmingham rounds out the top five with its 603 monthly sales.

The list of top 10 active markets includes Fife (565), Cornwall (554), South Lanarkshire (549), Somerset (528), and County Durham (497).

On the other end, the City of London has the least activity, with only 12 homes sold monthly. The Shetland Islands (20), Western Isles (26), and Orkney Islands (31) also have low sales numbers.
