A new study by Rightmove has found that Victorian houses top the list of most-searched period properties in the UK.
The use of Rightmove’s Keyword Sort tool has revealed that people have a keen interest in properties with historic and distinctive features, as ‘character’ and ‘period’ are among the most common keywords used in property searches this year.
Following Victorian homes in popularity are Georgian properties in second place, Edwardian properties in third, Tudor homes coming fourth, and Regency homes ranking fifth.
Tim Bannister, Rightmove’s Property Expert, suggests the growing interest in period properties is due to their unique charm and character often seen in period dramas. According to Bannister, Victorian houses are particularly favoured because of their classic allure, sturdy build, and generous space, often situated in desired areas with easy access to schools and transportation.
The five most popular types of period houses are:
- Victorian
- Georgian
- Edwardian
- Tudor
- Regency
Matt Thompson from Chestertons reflects on the Rightmove study, noting that London boasts a significant number of Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian houses, each with its enthusiasts. He points out an increase in the popularity of Georgian homes post-pandemic due to their spaciousness for home offices. Nonetheless, with the high demand for properties in London, all types of historical architecture remain appealing to buyers.
Robert McLaughlin of KFH adds his observation that the Victorian homes, ranging from compact terraces to large villas, continue to be sought after for their timeless character details.
Michael Holden from NAEA Propertymark advises that despite their appeal, prospective owners should be aware of the potential challenges when it comes to maintenance, like roofing or windows, that often come with older homes.
