Julie James Steps In as Housing Minister in Welsh Cabinet Changes

Julie James, previously in charge of climate change, is now the housing minister, appointed by Wales’ new First Minister Vaughan Gething.

She steps into her role following Mark Drakeford’s resignation.

Timothy Douglas from Propertymark called on James to reconsider Wales’ focus on implementing rent controls.

He stated: “We’re glad to see a dedicated housing ministerial position again, as we’ve always said it’s crucial due to the significant challenges ahead in Wales. It’s good that Julie James will continue her work in housing to ensure stability.

“But we urge Julie James to pay attention to the property sector’s concerns and halt the movement toward rent controls in Wales.

“The Minister needs to collaborate with other government areas to boost housing supply, reconsider taxes on additional properties, and support housing decarbonization.

“Moreover, Propertymark insists on the creation of a Welsh Housing Survey for improved data collection, aiding in informed policy development.”

Douglas continued: “Propertymark is happy with Julie James becoming the housing minister and we’re eager to meet and tackle future housing challenges in Wales.

“We are looking to enhance our positive relationship with the minister and advocate for property agents to the Welsh government.”

Notably, the new First Minister Vaughan Gething is recognized as the first Black government minister in Europe.

He remarked: “Today, we start a new chapter in our nation’s story — a story we write together.

“This marks a significant moment not only because I am honoured to be the first Black European country leader, but also because it signifies a leap forward generationally.”
