Once the site of the former Cottenham Racecourse, now Steeple Chase Farm, is up for sale after its last event in 2020. The venue, which traces its origins back to the 1830s, spans 202 acres and can be purchased in its entirety or split into four parts. Savills in Cambridge is handling the sale.
Permission was granted by the South Cambridgeshire District Council to convert the site’s main stand into a private four-bedroom house. Oliver Carr, from Savills’ rural agency team, notes the site’s rich history in horse racing, and how it used to draw large crowds, including royalty. After a decline in attendance, the space, mainly used for agriculture now, is on the market following the retirement of its long-time owner.
The redevelopment, envisioned by NP Architects, will keep the grandstand’s main features, incorporating historic racing elements. There’s also approval for additional structures like a home office and garage. Nick Dakin from Dakin Estates highlighted the design’s intent to maintain the site’s historical significance.
