£15k Fine for Landlords and Property Managers

Property managers and landlords in the Haringey area have been fined £15,000 due to running an unsafe and unlicensed property that was designated as a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO).

The property had been unlicensed for two years and had fallen into a state of disrepair, suffering from serious safety issues such as insufficient fire safety measures. Despite the council stepping in to address these issues, the problems were not fixed.

Eubert Malcolm, who oversees community safety at Haringey Council, stated: “We absolutely will not tolerate any private landlords in our area ignoring their legal responsibilities.

“Landlords who are caught without a proper license for their properties, or who try to get licenses they know are incorrect, will be either prosecuted or hit with civil penalty fines. Furthermore, their details will be entered into the GLA Rogue Landlord and Agent Checker database.

“The welfare of Haringey’s residents is key to us, and we’ll use every tool at our disposal to protect them.

“We urge all landlords and agents who let properties to adhere to the law, lest they face the consequences of enforcement action.”

The fines were levelled at two managing agents and landlords.

The property management agency is faced with paying a civil penalty fine of £8,000 and will be noted in the GLA database, which tracks those in London’s private letting sector who have been fined or have legal convictions for housing offenses.
